ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has revised its AI infrastructure investment plan upwards for 2026. According to reports published on Saturday, May 9, 2026, the Chinese giant increased its Capex (Capital Expenditure) to over 200 billion yuan (approximately $30 billion), a 25% jump from the initial budget.

Focus on Domestic Chips and Technological Sovereignty

This move is a direct response to the increasing export restrictions imposed by the United States, which complicates access to advanced GPUs from Nvidia. To mitigate geopolitical risks, ByteDance is channeling a significant portion of this budget towards acquiring AI chips manufactured in China, such as Huawei's Ascend processors.

Although the US has authorized the export of specific chip versions like the H200 to the Chinese market, the Beijing government has been encouraging its big techs to prioritize local suppliers. By strengthening the internal supply chain, ByteDance aims to ensure that the development of its recommendation algorithms and new language models is not disrupted by new trade sanctions.

Global Data Center Expansion

Beyond hardware, the $30 billion will also fund a massive expansion of data centers outside China. Recently, the company announced large-scale infrastructure projects in Thailand and Finland, aiming to reduce latency for its global services and comply with local data sovereignty requirements.

Industry analysts point out that this level of investment places ByteDance on a spending scale comparable to Meta and Google, reflecting the company's urgency to lead the next phase of generative AI. The "silicon sovereignty" strategy may serve as a model for other Chinese companies seeking to protect themselves from the volatility in diplomatic relations between the world's two largest economic powers.
