Epic Games Integrates AI into Fortnite for Faster Creation and Drops 'Made with AI' Labels

Epic Games is integrating Artificial Intelligence tools directly into its workflow to speed up the development of Fortnite and the Unreal Engine. The announcement was made by Stephanie Arnette, Epic's external development manager, during a panel at Gamescom Latam, held recently.

Productivity over Replacement

Arnette addressed one of the industry's most sensitive topics today: the fear that AI will replace human professionals. According to the executive, Epic's vision is to use the technology as an "efficiency multiplier." The goal is to automate repetitive tasks that previously took dozens of hours, allowing teams to focus on the creative and strategic aspects of development.

"If a task took 10 hours and can now be done in much less time with AI assistance, that's a valid use case for us," explained Arnette. She confirmed that the company is already exploring AI tools in the art department, although implementation is kept under strict control.

Full Control and the End of 'Made with AI' Labels

A crucial point in Epic's strategy is technological sovereignty. The company does not allow external co-development partners to use their own AI tools in Fortnite without prior approval. "Control is from the inside out," stated the manager, ensuring that Epic has the final say on how and where AI is applied.

This stance aligns with recent statements from CEO Tim Sweeney, who asserted that AI will become so ubiquitous in game development that specific labels like 'Made with AI' will be unnecessary. For Sweeney, AI is a software tool like any other already used in the Unreal Engine, such as physics systems or dynamic lighting.

Developer Assistant: AI in Practice

Epic already offers the Developer Assistant, an AI-based tool designed to assist creators within the Unreal Engine and Fortnite Creative ecosystems. The assistant helps with code writing, asset optimization, and technical problem-solving, serving as a copilot for developers of all levels.

Despite facing staff cuts at the beginning of 2026, the company insists that adopting AI is not a move to reduce labor costs but a strategic necessity to keep up with the fast-paced updates required by a game as a service (GaaS) today.
